Sixth title in the bag for CALS students at National Academic Quiz Bowl
Suppose an asset has a purchase price of $10,000 and a 10-year life. Using the double-declining balance method of depreciation, what is its book value at the end of the first year?
Members of the UF teams that just won two of the top three spots in the National Academic Quiz Bowl championship at the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association’s annual meeting in Milwaukee, Wis., probably know the answer.
Team “Florida Orange,” (Kristen Kovalsky, John Lai and Stephen Morgan) bested Texas A&M University in the battle for the national title. And “Florida Blue,” (Lisa Hibbard, Felipe Martinez and Alexis Nemati), snared third place. Coming in fourth was the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
IFAS’ Food and Resource Economics Department (FRED) participates in the Jeopardy-style tournament each year. The three-member teams must answer questions that cover such disciplines as economics, marketing, management, quantitative methods, finance, and agricultural policy.
UF typically sends two teams and alternates to the competition and has had great success, winning national championships in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2009. This year’s alternates were Rukmini Manrique and Jerrod Penn.
Lecturer Mikael Sandberg took the team to the two-day competition, which ended July 27.
Because building a winning team takes so much preparation, FRED students are identified as likely team members as sophomores and juniors. Students may earn one credit hour per academic year for their participation.
And in case you were wondering -- that book value? It’s $8,000.
