Three extension directors take EnTAP

Three IFAS county extension directors were chosen to participate in the first Energy Training for Agriculture Professionals (EnTAP) course, funded by the USDA’s Sustainable Agricultural Research and Education program.

Jacque Breman, Union County extension director, Clay Olson, Taylor County extension director, and Susan Kelly, Sumter County extension director, were chosen for the training by the National Center for Appropriate Technology and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.

The course will be held near Goldsboro, N.C. from Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Participants, whose costs will be paid, were selected from a competitive pool of more than 70 applicants.

EnTAP will prepare graduates to lead training back in their home counties, helping local residents manage energy resources profitably and sustainably. Participants will learn about renewable energy technology and energy-efficiency opportunities available for farmers and rural landowners.

Olson plans to use his training to help small-scale farmers meet heat and energy needs; Breman hopes to help Union County residents find simple heating and cooling systems and integrating energy technologies to help farmers and rural landowners; and Kelly plans to use her training to work on alternative energy and bioenergy development.
