Two IFAS students win at American Mosquito Control Association meeting

Two IFAS students have won prizes for making the best student presentations during the American Mosquito Control Association’s annual meeting in New Orleans.

Alex Chaskopoulou gave a presentation on her work with UF urban entomologist Phil Koehler to help Greece control its massive mosquito problem by using a high-tech, environmentally friendly system that uses a helicopter to spray tiny amounts of insecticide into precision-targeted areas. She earned first place and a $2,000 award.

Stephanie Larrick, a master’s student based at the Florida Medical Entomology Lab in Vero Beach, earned honorable mention and a $1,500 prize. Her presentation described a new testing technique that detects how far a mosquito larvicide can travel.

The Hollandsworth prize, named for former AMCA member Gerald Hollandsworth, was funded by his family and encourages student participation in the AMCA national meeting.
