Lori Warren to receive 2008 Florida Agri-Women Founder's Award

Lori Warren, assistant professor of animal sciences has been selected to receive Florida Agri-Women Founder’s Award.

Florida Agri-Women is a network of women promoting Florida agriculture to consumers and legislators.  Established in 2003 as a state affiliate of American Agri-Women, Florida Agri-Women’s membership includes women involved in all aspects of agriculture.

Warren teaches several undergraduate courses, mentors graduate students, conducts research in equine nutrition, and serves Florida’s horse owners through her extension work. She consistently seeks to involve her students in agricultural-related activities through events such as “Ropin’ in the Swamp," offering summer internship opportunities in her research lab and encouraging her graduate students to participate in State Extension activities such as the State 4-H Horse Show and educational seminars.

In 2007, Warren was awarded the Young Scientist Award by the Equine Science Society (for which she currently serves on the Board of Directors), and she currently serves on the National Research Council’s Committee on the Evaluation of the Safety of Dietary Supplements for Horses, Dogs and Cats. Warren is also working closely with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services helping to develop Best Management Practices for horse operations.

“We salute Dr. Warren for her contributions to Florida agriculture,” said Katie Edwards, president of Florida Agri-Women.  “Dr. Warren’s dedication to and promotion of Florida agriculture has made her a role model for other women in agriculture.”

The award will be presented at the 5th Annual Founders’ Day Dinner on Saturday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m.

Tracy Duda-Chapman of A. Duda & Sons will serve as keynote speaker.  The event will take place during Florida Agri-Women’s Annual Meeting at the Clarion Inn Suites and Conference Center in Gainesville.  Tickets are $40 per person.  For more information on the Founders’ Day Dinner, contact Debbie Brady at (305) 246-5514.
