North Florida master gardeners work soil to honor fallen firefighters
A group of Leon County master gardeners have devoted more than 100 hours to prepare a firefighters’ memorial garden in Tallahassee.
The garden, which demonstrates Florida-friendly principles, will be dedicated on or about Sept. 11 as a tribute to firefighters who died during the terrorist attacks in 2001.
Eighteen master gardeners, led by Leon County extension agent David Marshall, have toiled to prepare and plant three large beds at the Centerville Road fire station.
Tallahassee Nurseries and Tropic Traditions Inc. of Gainesville donated plants and the Tallahassee Dog Obedience Club raised almost $300 to buy more. Asplundh Tree Expert Co. supplied mulch.
Florida Yards and Neighborhoods encourages homeowners to water efficiently; mulch; recycle; select the least-toxic pest control; put the right plant in the right place; fertilize only when necessary; provide for wildlife and protect water and limit runoff.
