Jim Graham named fellow by the American Phytopathological Society
Citrus REC soil microbiology Professor Jim Graham has been named a fellow of the American Phytopathological Society.
He’ll receive the award July 30 at the group’s annual meeting in San Diego.
Graham’s research has most often focused on eradication and control of the citrus canker epidemic in Florida, including research that demonstrated the need to remove canker-exposed trees in larger areas for eradication purposes. After a series of hurricanes made eradication impossible, he developed programs to help growers manage the disease.
Graham’s research identified a new soil-borne pathogen, called Phytophthora palmivora, as responsible for brown rot of citrus fruit, as well as attacks of trees on normally resistant rootstocks and accelerated loss of trees to root insect attack.
He also showed that normally beneficial, root-inhabiting mycorrhizal fungi could become parasitic on plants when grown in soil with excessive phosphorus.
