Caption this picture #5
Thanks to everyone who sent in entertaining captions for the last photo! Check below to see everyone's comments--and don't forget to weigh in on this week's photo.
The premise: IFAS and the University of Florida have long played a central role in the story of Florida and this nation's agricultural development. This saga has been documented in letters, art, research/government documents and photographs for more than a century.
Unfortunately, there are a few photographs from UF's agricultural golden years that come with little or no description...so, we thought we would just take a guess.
And, we encourage you to, as well.
Here're the results from last week. Thanks to Tom and Brian for writing in with comments on what this thing is.
"This looks like one of the first airboats. The engine looks like a Ford Y V8 and the marking on the rudder looks like it is from the Florida Department of Forestry."--Brian from FLREC
"I'm pretty sure that's a primitive airboat. The gizmo that's up on stilts is a motor, with a big propeller attached. The board-like doodad next to it is the tail, which redirects the airflow to turn the boat."--Tom Nordlie

Now, here's the funny. This is definitely the best bunch thusfar:
"All that remains of a little-known meeting of Amelia Earhart and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas at Everglades Experiment Station, Belle Glade."--Larry Halsey, CED
"The world's first battery-operated mosquito-collecting net shown here in a test in the Everglades."--Howard Frank
"Jerry studies the new mousetrap design and ponders why scientists built a human-size prototype and whether mice will really stop to get their picture taken."--Robin Snyder
"According to the 'IFAS: Solutions for Your Wife' website, this contraption will transport you to a secret fishing location devoid of chores."'--Adam Naim (Adam's not married, by the way....)
"Uh? Doesn't give quite the thrust I thought it would. Well, back to the drawing board."--Yvonne Reese
"The third film in the "Saturday Night Fever" franchise was a box-office flop. Critics took issue with the airboat's cramped dance floor and protagonist Tony Manero's farfetched decision to relocate to the Everglades and begin life anew as a snapping-turtle fisherman. But perhaps the producers' worst mistake was casting the BeeGees as a trio of wisecracking wading birds."--Tom Nordlie
Here's the photo for next week. Again, any real information would be appreciated. Exactly why is that car covered in moss? This photo comes with the caption " Rally Day-all dressed for street parade. Lake County."
But we think you can do better than that.
