Inside IFAS August 2005
Welcome to the third online issue of the “INSIDE IFAS” faculty and staff newsletter. We hope everyone is enjoying the hustle and bustle of the new school year, and getting ready for one of the most eagerly anticipated Gator football seasons ever.
If you’ve been away from campus for the summer, you’ll notice that we’ve switched to an electronic format, and we hope you like it. Also, we’re proud to say that “INSIDE IFAS” will be a monthly publication from here on out.
In case you’ve missed our past two online issues, they are available on the “INSIDE IFAS” archives Web site, at http://news.ifas.ufl.edu/inside_ifas/index.htm
This issue marks the debut of another new feature, “INFORM,” which showcases activities that can help UF/IFAS personnel enhance their job performance or better understand what UF/IFAS does for Florida. We’re looking for ideas for future installments of this feature, so if your department or unit offers a product or service that you’d like to promote to an “insider” audience, please let us know.
In our last issue we debuted a links section featuring other UF/IFAS online newsletters. We’ve been notified of several more newsletters recently and they are included in this issue. If you produce an online newsletter and would like us to link to it, please contact us at insideifas@ifas.ufl.edu.
As always, we need your help to make this newsletter the voice of UF/IFAS faculty and staff. Please send brief news items to insideifas@ifas.ufl.edu, including all the essential information – who, what, when, where, why and how.
Produced by UF/IFAS External and Media Relations, the online “INSIDE IFAS” is a work in progress, so please let us know if you have any suggestions for improvements. We look forward to hearing from you!

UF/IFAS IMAGE Awards Honor Promotional Achievements
In April, the 2004 UF/IFAS IMAGE Awards recognized outstanding marketing and communications efforts by UF/IFAS personnel, and this year’s awards featured a twist – for the first time, two projects were selected for the top honor, the Grand IMAGE Award.
One Grand IMAGE honoree was Chuck Woods (IFAS Communication Services) for his news release, “UF Researcher: New Low-Carb Potato to Debut in January.”
The other Grand IMAGE Award went to a project team from the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences, UF/IFAS Extension IFAS Communication Services and WUFT-FM radio, for the radio program “Family Album Radio” and its supporting Web site.
The complete project team included Suzanna Smith, Donna Davis, Nayda Torres, Linda Bobroff, Diana Converse, Jo Turner, Mary Harrison, Amarat “Amy” Simonne, Kate Fogarty, Ashley Wood, Scott Weinberg, Kathy Sohar, Al Williamson, Bill Beckett and Richard Lehner.
The IMAGE (Institutional Marketing Awards for Gaining Excellence) Awards Program is conducted to encourage, recognize, and celebrate the efforts of UF/IFAS employees and county extension agents in promoting their departments, events and programs. Entries are recognized for their success in providing information and enhancing the UF/IFAS image throughout the state.
Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are given in more than 14 categories including brochures, newsletters, videos and Web sites. One outstanding entry from the Gold Award winners is selected to receive the Grand IMAGE Award, which includes a $1,000 honorarium to be used toward program funding.
Information on next year’s awards will be announced this fall.

UF/IFAS Alumnus Miller Joins Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Conservation Effort
One of UF/IFAS’ own has joined the effort to preserve the ivory-billed woodpecker, a bird believed extinct for decades but recently found in two Arkansas wildlife refuges.
Karl Miller has been named to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Ivory Billed Woodpecker Recovery Team, an interdisciplinary effort that includes representatives of state fish and wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, universities and local governments.
Miller, currently a wildlife researcher with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, received his master’s degree from the UF/IFAS School of Forest Resources and Conservation in 1993 and his doctorate from the UF/IFAS wildlife ecology and conservation department in 2000.
As a member of the woodpecker recovery team’s Biology Working Group, Miller will help write sections of the recovery plan, including information about historical occurrences of the bird in Florida, where it was common in old-growth forests until the early 20th century. Miller said it is possible some areas previously known as ivory-billed woodpecker habitat might warrant renewed search efforts for the bird.
Loss of habitat was the chief reason for the bird’s disappearance from most of the U.S. Southeast. Ivory-billed woodpeckers feed primarily on beetle larvae that live beneath the bark of dead but still-standing trees. Because such trees occur infrequently, the birds can survive only on large tracts of forest.
UF Community Campaign Kicks Off in September
The 2005 UF Community Campaign pledge drive takes place Sept. 26-Oct. 7, so please look for the pledge cards and consider supporting UF’s official charitable giving fundraiser with a payroll deduction. Founded in 1993, the campaign provides financial support to 76 nonprofit agencies serving residents of Alachua County and the surrounding area.
This year’s theme is “Gators Give in a Million Ways,” to commemorate the campaign's fund-raising goal of $1 million, the largest amount ever raised. All of UF’s more than 12,000 faculty and staff are eligible to participate, and donors have the option of choosing which agencies their dollars will support.
Let’s all show our Gator spirit by helping put this year’s campaign over the top! For more information, visit the campaign’s Web site at www.ufcc.ufl.edu.

ICS Photo Archive Offers High-Quality Images
Need photos for a brochure, Web site or PowerPoint presentation? Thousands of high-quality images of UF/IFAS personnel and projects, as well as Florida agriculture and natural resources subjects, are available at the IFAS Communication Services photo archive, http://ics.ifas.ufl.edu/pictures/.
To help users find photos quickly, the archive has three search modes. The first uses identification numbers assigned to the images, the fastest option if you know which photo you need and have its ID number. The keyword search is ideal for browsing multiple photos on the same subject. Users who simply need great-looking images and aren’t particular about subject matter can use the Photo Gallery option, which displays 40 thumbnail images at once.
Photos can be saved from the archives directly to your computer in low-resolution format. To obtain high-resolution versions at 300 dots per inch, jot down the identification numbers of the photos you need and contact Marisol Amador at 392-1773 or mamador@ifas.ufl.edu. High-resolution images are available as prints, on compact discs or electronic files.
The photo department can also take new photos to meet your needs. For UF departments, centers and offices there is no labor charge for custom work, you pay only the cost of materials and travel. For information, contact Thomas Wright at (352) 392-1773 or tsw@mail.ifas.ufl.edu.

At UF, he directs a unique research and teaching program that blends plant pathology, weed science, microbial technology and integrated weed control. He has published more than 350 scientific articles and four books, and is a founder of the multidisciplinary scientific journal, “Biological Control: Theory and Application in Pest Management.” Charudattan also holds 11 patents.
Stephens Promoted to Orange County Extension Director
Orange County has a new county extension director, and she’s a familiar face in UF/IFAS Extension. Glinder Simmons Stephens, who has worked as an agent in family and consumer sciences for more than 25 years, was chosen from a pool of three candidates to be the county’s CED. The position became effective Aug. 2.
Orange County is primarily an urban county with a growing and diverse population, Stephens said. Her goal is to address the needs of the local community within the realm of the UF/IFAS Extension mission.
One of Stephens’ major priorities is construction of a state-of-the-art extension site, The Orange County Extension Education Center, where existing residents and newcomers can get an overview of extension programming in agriculture, family and consumer sciences and 4-H and youth.
Stephens began working for UF/IFAS at the Gainesville campus in 1979, spending almost one year with the Department of Home Economics (forerunner of the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences) before joining Orange County Extension in 1980. She received a bachelor of science degree from Florida A&M University in 1979 and a master of science degree from the University of Central Florida in 1985.
McDowell Receives ASDA Fellow Award
Lee McDowell (animal sciences) received a 2005 Fellow Award from the American Dairy Science Association at its annual meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio July 24-28.
McDowell, who has served on the UF/IFAS faculty since 1971, is one of the world’s leading experts in the area of vitamin and mineral research for grazing livestock. The award recognizes ADSA members who have rendered distinguished service to the dairy industry for 20 years or more.
Raised on a livestock farm in upstate New York, McDowell has been involved in the dairy industry virtually his entire life. At UF, he is notable for international outreach efforts, having visited 59 countries in a total of 250 trips to share his research findings and help farmers improve their livestock productivity. He has authored or co-authored more than 1,100 publications.
Renovation Scheduled for Lake County Ag Center
A $1.2 million renovation is scheduled for the Lake County Agricultural Center in Tavares, headquarters of the Lake County Cooperative Extension Service. The project will include construction of a new lobby, classrooms, additional restrooms and a covered driveway. County extension Director Deborah Boulware said the improvements will help the center, which was built in the early 1960s, better serve the community for decades to come.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Aug. 8 at the center. Construction is expected to begin in early September and end in mid-February of 2006. The center will remain open during renovation.
Bobroff Honored with Mid-Career Award
Linda Bobroff (family, youth and community sciences) was the 2005 recipient of the Society for Nutrition Education’s Mid-Career Award, which recognizes an outstanding SNE member in “mid-career” for his or her professional accomplishments in nutrition education and significant contributions to the organization’s mission.
The award was presented at the SNE annual meeting, held in Orlando July 23-27.
Bobroff, a member of the UF/IFAS faculty since 1985, has provided leadership to UF/IFAS extension programs addressing significant nutrition and health concerns including heart health, diabetes, cancer risk reduction and weight management. She has also developed educational materials focused on maternal and infant nutrition, child nutrition and nutrition for elders.
“Family Album Radio” Draws USDA Attention
“Family Album Radio,” the UF/IFAS daily radio program focusing on family life and relationships, has drawn notice from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service via a story in the August issue of its online newsletter, “In Focus.” The article provides a good overview of the program and its companion Web site.
“Family Album Radio” is available free of charge to radio stations nationwide, and is produced in partnership with the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences, UF/IFAS Extension, IFAS Communication Services and radio stations WUFT-FM Classic 89 and WJUF-FM Nature Coast 90. For more information, visit the program’s Web site at www.familyalbumradio.org, or call (352) 392-2202, extension 255 or 305. Read the “In Focus” story at http://www.csrees.usda.gov/nea/family/in_focus/family_if_album.html.
Overholt, Cuda Receive Grant to Seek Hydrilla Enemies
William Overholt (Indian River REC) and James Cuda (entomology) were awarded a $21,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Invasive Plant Management, to conduct exploratory surveys for natural enemies of the submersed aquatic weed Hydrilla verticillata in East Africa.
First discovered growing wild in the United States in 1960, Hydrilla verticillata has become one of the nation’s most troublesome invasive plants. Natural enemies could be used in classical biological control strategies to manage the weed.
