Developer of low-carb potato wins award for distinguished service
IFAS associate professor Chad Hutchinson is this year’s winner of the Muffie Van Camp Becks award for distinguished service in horticulture.
Hutchinson, who has been with UF since 1999, is best known for his work developing the low-carbohydrate potato called SunLite, that’s been on the market since January 2005. SunLite has 30 percent fewer carbohydrates and 25 percent fewer calories than a standard baking potato.
The Muffie Van Camp Becks award is named for Martha Becks, an avid Volusia County horticulturalist, who died in 2002. Becks had been horticulture chairwoman for “Everybody’s Flower Show” held each year in Daytona Beach, and the award was established because of her longtime concern that achievements in horticulture didn’t get the recognition they deserved.
